When Did Credit Card Information Become Less Private?
A Disturbing Credit Card Trend
Have you noticed a credit card trend that has been occurring recently? Many businesses you deal with, including even doctors’ offices, are now requiring customers to provide credit card information prior to their first appointment. While I used to think getting swamped with credit card offers was a cause for concern, I’ve now replaced that worry with a new one.
Why Do They Need It?
I find it a bit unsettling that many companies require credit card information prior to services or a scheduled appointment. Realize that many companies require this of all customers, even if you have no intention of using a credit card to pay for services. Doesn't make sense, does it?
They Win, You Lose
Like it or not, many companies require credit card information to be kept on file. I realize that this trend is, in part, motivated by a desire for companies to protect themselves in the event a customer cancels at the last minute or fails to pay. Fortunately, after that first appointment, many companies will delete the credit card information from their computer system.
Still, though, what if I were a consumer who didn’t use credit cards or even have one in my name? That’s one tactic you can take when a company asks to keep a credit card on file. Will the company not schedule an appointment for you simply because you don’t have a credit card? Probably not. So always ask if there is an alternative to providing a credit card.
