What to Do If Your Credit Card Is Lost Or Stolen

Your Credit Card Has Been Lost or Stolen: Now What?

Whether it’s forgetfulness or just plain bad luck, at some point in your life you may find yourself in the situation of having your credit card lost or stolen. The question is, what do you do if your credit card is lost or stolen? How can you make sure that your damage is mitigated and that your liability is little to none?

First Things First

The first thing you will want to do when your credit card is lost or stolen is report it to your credit card company. Hopefully you have records of all of your account numbers and the phone numbers to each of your credit cards (as we’ve suggested in the past). With this information on hand, it will be easy to call your credit card companies and report your cards as lost or stolen.

Watch Your Statements Closely

Your credit card company will close the account of your lost or stolen credit card and will issue you a new account number. However, it is very important that you look very closely at the last statement of your old credit card and that you inspect your new statements carefully as well. If you notice any fraudulent charges on any of your statements, you should immediately report them to your credit card company.
