Should You Use Your Unsecured Credit Cards to Finance Your Summer Vacation?

With summer approaching, you are probably wondering if it is a good idea to charge that family vacation you’ve been planning to your unsecured credit cards. There is no doubt about it, unsecured credit cards, and really any credit cards, can certainly come in very handy for all sorts of life events. But is it really wise to charge a vacation?

The Lesser of the Evils

Some individuals would not otherwise go on vacation if they didn’t use their unsecured credit cards to finance the vacation. If you aren’t agreeable to postponing a vacation this year but you know you will have to use your unsecured credit cards to pay for it, then make sure you pick the right credit card to use.

If you have to charge your vacation to unsecured credit cards, try to use one that has the lowest interest rate. If you currently have a credit card that has a low introductory APR on new purchases, that credit card would probably be a good choice.

Cash First

Just because you'll be charging a portion of your vacation to unsecured credit cards, it doesn't mean you have to charge the whole thing. If you have any available cash or can save or earn some before the summer, then pay for a portion of your vacation with cash and charge the remaining balance.

Have a Plan

If you do decide to charge your summer vacation to your unsecured credit cards, you should come up with a plan to pay off the balance within a specified time frame after you return from vacation.

Vacations are about rest and relaxation and creating memories. If you are one of those individuals who are going to not enjoy yourself on vacation because you used your unsecured credit cards, then you might want to skip a vacation this year and try to set aside money for next year’s vacation. Most consumers still manage to enjoy themselves on vacation even if they had to use their credit cards to make it all happen because they recognize what a valuable tool unsecured credit cards can be when it comes to enjoying life events.
