Should You Use Your Credit Cards When Planning a Group Vacation?
What You Need to Know about Credit Cards and Group Vacations
If you’re going on a group vacation this year, you might want to work out the details so that you don’t end up with more credit card debt than you bargained for. Sure the idea behind a group vacation is certainly fun. It’s a great way for a group of friends or extended family members to spend some quality time with one another relaxing and having fun. But your credit cards can take a beating if you don’t plan properly.
Plan Ahead
As with any vacation, group vacations most likely will require you to use your credit cards. There is almost always one person that gets the responsibility of making the hotel reservations. In order to make sure that you’re not taking all the responsibility for the vacation arrangements try to limit your involvement and distribute the tasks between everyone.
Hotel Reservations
Be careful when using credit cards to make hotel reservations. There have been cases in which consumers reported being charged twice because of an error. While such a problem can certainly be corrected, until it is, you will have two credit cards carrying potentially high charges.
Car Rentals
If you have a great discount for rental cars offered through your credit card company, volunteer to make the reservation for the rental car and ask someone else to make the hotel reservation or vice versa.
Shared Expenses
Come up with a plan for how you’ll handle shared expenses such as gas. Even when credit cards aren’t involved, it can be difficult to negotiate expenses. If one individual is using their car for the trip rather than renting a vehicle, that person shouldn’t have to contribute to gas since they will have wear and tear on the vehicle to consider.
Any time you go on a group vacation, make sure you are not the only one who is always pulling out their credit cards. Have a discussion beforehand so that everyone is treated fairly and no one individual’s credit cards get maxed to the moon.
