MasterCard Jokes Going to Far?
Are Some People Taking MasterCard Jokes Too Far?
MasterCard jokes are all the rage lately. Millions of people are gleaning humor from parodies of the MasterCard priceless commercials, but are some of these parodies going to far? MasterCard’s lawyers think so.
Let’s Think About MasterCard Jokes for a Moment
Let’s just think a moment. You’re a huge corporation who has spent tons of money on an advertising campaign. Suddenly, there are thousands of people making fun of this campaign, which isn’t a big deal, but some of the jokes they’re making are downright disturbing. What do you do?
Getting Lawyers Involved
That’s exactly what is happening with the MasterCard jokes. What started out as harmless humor has turned into potential lawsuits. Some sites have been putting pretty disturbing MasterCard jokes on their pages and MasterCard’s lawyers have been sending out letters to these sites demanding that they cease and desist. What are the site’s responses to these letters?
Protected by Law
The sites that have been putting MasterCard jokes on their web pages are ignoring MasterCard’s demands saying that they don’t have to remove their Mastercard jokes from their websites because they’re protected by parody and satire laws instated by the federal government so it appears that we’ll have enough MasterCard jokes to go around for quite some time.
Comments
I totally agree. Anyone who creates something original, no matter how "disturbing," that is based upon a big corporation's commercial, is protected by the First Amendment.
Comedians parody the president and other politicians all the time, and there isn't a thing they can do about it. Tough green moldy banana bread, Mastercard.
