Is The State of the Economy Affecting Your Credit Card Debt?
Why You Need to Look At Your Credit Card Debt Now, More Than Ever
It's no secret to our readers that I talk about credit card debt quite a lot. After all, there are two ways to handle your credit cards - the right way and the wrong way. If you're credit card debt is piling up, you're handling them the wrong way and I'd feel remiss if I didn't say something about it. However, more and more credit card holders are finding themselves deeper into credit card debt than ever before. If your debt has been on the rise, here are some things you need to know.
The Growing Trend
Credit card debt is a growing trend in America, and the figures prove it's fact and not horror-story fiction. If you took the credit card debt of 40 or 50 years ago and adjusted it for inflation, it'd have been around $10 billion. Today, that debt is more than $900 billion. It paints a scary picture.
What's the Problem?
With many families feeling the pinch of the economy's issues, many are turning to credit cards to help pay for their everyday expenses. Don't have enough cash for gas? Put it on the card. No money for groceries? You can't just starve! Charge it.
While it may seem like a great short-term solution to your immediate financial woes, this line of thinking can cause serious financial hardship in the future. Eventually, your credit limit will be maxed out and you'll have a hard time making those minimum monthly payments. This is when credit card debt becomes a serious problem.
The Solution
So what's the answer? Don't charge something if you can't afford to pay cash. If you have the cash and are using the card for convenience, put the cash in an envelope (or deduct it from your checking ledger) when you get home so you can pay the credit card when the bill comes in.
What if you don't have cash for the things you need, like food, gas, etc.? Then take a serious look at your finances and cut back expenses. Contrary to what we've been led to believe, cell phones, cable television and even high-speed Internet access are luxuries, not necessities (unless, of course, they're needed for your job or business).
Cut back where you can and if you have to get a second job, you're not alone. People everywhere do it. Only by changing your spending habits and increasing your income will you be able to wipe away all of your credit card debt.
