How to Pay Off Credit Card Debt
Getting Out of Credit Card Debt Isn’t Impossible
In today’s day and age, living beyond a person’s means is second nature. The majority of society is in debt, and charging purchases we can’t afford to pay cash for has become a matter of habit. Are we destined to live in debt, or can we get out of credit card debt and start living within our means again? Believe it or not, it is possible to get out of credit card debt and stay out of credit card debt. It just takes a matter of time, patience and persistence.
The Average Debt
It’s a scary thought, but the average amount of credit card debt held by the typical American family is in excess of $8,000. The scarier part is that when you start calculating interest, you may pay more than double that before you pay the credit card off. So how do you pay off your credit card debt quickly and effectively?
Don’t Pay Just the Minimum
First things first, make sure you’re paying more than just your minimum monthly payment when you pay your credit card bills each month. If you’re just making the minimum payment, it’s going to take you forever to get out of credit card debt. However, if you pay twice the minimum payment or three times the minimum payment, you’ll get out of credit card debt much, much sooner.
Carry It Over
When one of your credit cards gets paid off, don’t stop putting the money that you put towards that credit card towards your credit card debt. Roll the payments over to another credit card so you’ll be paying more towards the principal of the credit card. Then once you pay off that credit card, keep rolling over the amount of your monthly payments to your other credit cards until all of your credit cards are paid off.
Stick to It
It may sound easier than it is, but it can be done. Getting out of credit card debt should be a priority. Then once you are out of debt, work hard to ensure that you’re not going to get back into the debt that you have gotten yourself out of.
