Helpful Tips for Using Your Credit Cards This Christmas Season

Credit Cards and Christmas Shopping

If you’re planning on using your credit cards to purchase Christmas presents this year, there are a few things you need to know. One might think that using credit cards for Christmas shopping would be fairly simple -- and in many ways it is. However, there are some tips to follow if you want to make the most of your credit cards this holiday shopping season.

Payback Time

You don't want to be paying for this year's purchases when it's time to buy next year's. Before you go shopping, set up a budget. Will you be able to pay off your Christmas purchases by January or March of next year? Or will it take you longer? Depending on your answer to that, base your Christmas purchasing around that.

If you can only pay $100 a month towards your credit card and you want to pay it off in 3 months, your Christmas shopping budget is going to be less than $300 (when you factor in interest).

Use the Right Credit Card

Don’t just pull out the credit card that is on the top of your wallet when paying for holiday purchases. Take a look at any special perks your credit cards offer. If you get a good incentive, such as no interest for 6 months or a cash back bonus, then go ahead and use that credit card to make your Christmas purchases.

Shopping 101

When you’re out shopping for Christmas gifts, exercise caution. Identity theft criminals are on the alert this time of year. Pull out your credit card when is it time to make your purchases rather than hanging onto the credit card while you’re standing in line. You don’t want anyone getting a hold of your credit card numbers.

Haste Makes Waste

Also, double check that you put your credit card back into your wallet and that the sales clerk gives you a receipt before you leave the counter. This can be hard during the busy holiday shopping season, but it's important to keep receipts for the Christmas gifts you purchase.
