Getting a Credit Card with No Credit History

The Catch 22 of No Credit History

So you want a credit card, actually you need a credit card, but you don’t have a credit history so you don’t qualify for one. On the other hand, you can’t build a credit history without a credit card. Or can you? Believe it or not, you can build a credit history without a traditional credit card. It’s just a matter of knowing where to go.

Secured Credit Cards

Secured credit cards are easy to qualify for and they’re a great way to establish a credit history. Simply apply for a secured card, make the payment for the security deposit and you’ll be on your way to building a credit history in no time. Just make sure the credit card company you get your secured card through reports your credit card payments to all of the credit reporting agencies.

Credit Cards for People with Scarred Credit

There are a number of credit card companies that cater to individuals with tarnished credit or with no credit at all. You will wind up paying an annual fee and a higher interest rate, but at least you’ll be able to get the credit that you need and deserve.

Gas Station Credit Cards

Oftentimes gas station credit cards will be more allowing than the big cards like Visa and MasterCard. If you don’t have any credit history, try establishing credit with a gasoline card rather than going straight for the low interest Visa and MasterCard credit cards.

Department Store Credit Cards

Much like gas station credit cards, department store credit cards are often willing to give a chance to people without any credit. If you haven’t been able to qualify for a Visa or MasterCard, apply for a department store credit card and see if you can qualify there.

Remember, once you do get the credit card you deserve, use it wisely so you can qualify for the low-interest credit cards that you should eventually have.
