First Time Credit Card Applicants

What To Expect If You’re a First Time Credit Card Applicant

Being a first time credit card applicant can be a big headache. If you’re not a college student, most credit card companies will shy away from your credit card application and if you have even just minor blemishes on your credit history (such as medical bills, etc), the task of getting a first time credit card can be even harder to accomplish. So what’s a consumer to do?

Start Small

If you’ve never had a credit card before, don’t go applying for a super platinum plus card from one of the most discerning credit card providers on the block. Not only will you not get the card, but you might hurt your chances of getting other credit cards since each credit card application shows up on your credit report.

Instead, apply for a department store credit card or a gasoline credit card. In general, gas cards and department store credit cards are easier to get than the traditional Visa or MasterCard. Then, once you have built a credit card history with these credit cards, you can apply for a more prominent Visa or MasterCard.
