Are Automatic Credit Card Payments a Good Idea?
You Might Want to Think Twice About Automatic Credit Card Payments
Automatic credit card payments are becoming more and more a part of our everyday lives. From video rental subscriptions to health supplements orders and web hosting plans, automatic credit card payments are a part of our normal, everyday activities. But are they a good idea?
A Necessary Evil
I personally do not like the idea of automatic credit card payments, especially if you’re in the habit of carrying a balance on your credit card. If you do, you’re paying interest on every automatic payment that’s charged to your credit card and if your automatic credit card payments ever cause you to go over your credit limit, you could be looking at a hefty over-the-limit fee from your credit card company.
That being said, automatic credit card payments are indeed necessary at times, making them a necessary evil. For instance, if you have a website, chances are more likely than not the web host is going to bill your credit card automatically each month. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do what you can to prevent automatic credit card payments.
Before signing up for anything that requires regular monthly credit card installments, see if you can have them bill you manually each month instead. If the service provider isn’t willing to do it, then you may want to take your business elsewhere.
Comments
I got screwed using automatic payments. My cell phone provider keep billing me (4-months in a row) even after I went to their store in person to pay my bill in cash. I closed my credit card account, but my credit card provider said they wouldn't stop debiting my account until they received notice from the cell phone provider. In other words, even if I was right, the cell phone provider, with their accomplice the credit card provider, could keep jerking me as long as they felt like it. I had a hell of a time getting through to the cell phone provider on the telephone and even after I did, they DIDN'T STOP.
Here is an article that details how to stop this crap.

Live and learn. I will NEVER use automatic payment again.
